Review: EVA Air Business Class Boeing 787 [SFO - TPE]
Quick Take:
EVA Air’s Royal Laurel Business Class on their 787 is a fantastic modern business class product. While perhaps somewhat lacking in ground facilities with USA departure, the hard product and service in the sky were exceptional.
Overall Rating:
SFO recently started (as of May 2026) offering 787-9s on this SFO to TPE route, that was previously only available on their 777s. The seats used on the EVA 787s are much more modern and ‘swanky’ comparability. So while both are more than adequate products, given the opportunity I will fly the 787 every time.
I have flown this particular aircraft with EVA a number of times and have always been impressed. This will be the first time out of San Francisco though, so we will see how SFO landside and catering perform.

How I Booked EVA Air Business Class
This flight cost me 75,000 Air Canada miles through Aeroplan, and 78 CAD in taxes and fees. Cash fare for this ticket hovers between 3500 and 5500, so this ends up being a 5-7CPP redemption which is great value. Comparatively, I do see these same seats pop up through United for 110k.
I notice that EVA Air only ever seems to release one of these partner rewards bookings at a time, so finding 2 on the same flight may be somewhere between difficult and impossible.
EVA Air 787 Business Class Lounge
EVA Air flies out of the International Terminal at SFO. Theoretically, according to the EVA website, there are a number of different lounges that Business Class / Royal Laurel Class will have access to – The British Airways lounge, the AirFrance lounge, and possibly the United Club. Though the United Club is on the opposite end of the airport, or a little TSA hop between terminals A and G.
This morning I was given a pass for the British Airways Lounge. Upon visiting the desk, I was informed boarding would be directly from the lounge. Something I’ve only ever had the pleasure of doing with Emirates, from their lounges at JFK and their home lounge in Dubai.
British Airways Lounge | SFO
The British Airways lounge is located right next to our departure gate A5 this morning.
It’s a decent sized lounge, and not crowded yet this morning. Signs out front indicate it also will be serving JAL morning departures, so I anticipate it filling up as we get closer to departures.
Entry is down an elevator, and opens into the dining room/bar area.
Well stocked self serve bar area, as well as sparkling wine and a couple of bottles of local red wine.
Food this morning is a bit of an Asian fare, catering to the morning JAL departures as well as this EVA flight.
Congee station.
Past the dining area opens up into the rear half of the lounge, direct gate boarding is offered further towards the rear.
It’s an attractive lounge – I particularly like the wooden accent wall.
Tucked in the back is a little hidey hole area. Kind of an odd choice
Near the boarding gate is the dining room for First Class passengers – maybe next time.
Fresh veggies and cold cuts and cheese station.
Automatic espresso machine and sparkling water on tap.
EVA Air 787 Business Class Boarding
Boarding directly from the lounge today, which is great. I’ve only ever done this with Emirates, out of JFK and their home lounge in Dubai.
Upon seating, FAs are around to say ‘hi’ and ask how I’d like to be addressed.
Pre-departure sparkling water, prosecco, etc also makes its way around with cold towels.
Pyjamas are also offered on this flight, and these are brought around as well before departure.
Orders are then taken for post takeoff beverage, lunch, and pre-landing meal
EVA Air 787 Business Class Cabin
I am a big fan of the EVA Air Laurel Class cabins on their 787s. Great color tones, and a modern look.
I find it looks particularly nice in-flight with the mood lighting and stars.
EVA Air 787 Business Class Seat
EVA Air uses the ‘Thompson Aero Vantage XL” seats for their Laurel Class in the 787s. Standout features being seat width and a large console.
IFE Remote, reading light, power sockets and good customizable seat controls (including massage feature) easily accessible.
Somewhat shallow cubby with a water and EVA Air headphones. There was enough space to jam my headphone case in there as well. But only just.
Clean and wide with lots of leg room.
Slide out opaque privacy screen adds to the feeling of privacy and I never felt the need for the ‘doors’ that the more modern ‘suite seats’ have.
After meal service, a comfortable seat topper/mattress is brought out
Fully reclined for bed mode, with plenty of width and foot space for me.
EVA Air 787 Business Class In Flight Entertainment and WiFi
Large responsive touchscreen with a good selection of western and Asian films, as well as a few shows.
Not a terribly extensive library, but enough of a mix of new and old.
In flight map has a dino mode which naturally will be the map of choice. (I don’t recall this option from last time)
It turns the airplane into a pterodactyl, and adds stegosauruses to Africa.
WiFi is free for all passengers, which is probably why it was so slow. Someone needs to call Starlink.
EVA Air branded headphones are comfortable and seem quality.
EVA Air 787 Business Class Lavatories
Middle lavatory is quite large and kept clean during the flight. I did venture up to the front lavatory shortly after meal service and noted the floors were a bit dirty. But timing wise the crew were busy cleaning up the galley post meal, and frankly its more on the passengers.
Lavatories are stocked with face mist and body lotion. However lacking in mouthwash and toothbrushes. I don’t really expect these, but a few of the competing airlines in this space do offer them, so somewhat disappointed to not see them.
EVA Air 787 Business Class Meals
Pre-checkin there are a number of preorder options online. All looked good, as well as the in-flight menu.
Standouts being on the drinks menu, with 250 dollar bottles of champagne, and a really interesting sounding sparkling jasmine tea.

First Meal
Table was set shortly after cruising was reached. Nuts (not warm) followed by my ordered champagne were brought.
The seared tuna was fantastic. Great flavor combinations with the citrus and wasabi.
Sunchoke chestnut soup was next, it seemed to have bacon bits in there. Smelled and tasted amazing. Right up there with that Starlux soup.
Salad and more garlic bread brought, salad was fine. Dressing was good, albeit a bit thick.
For the main, I chose the veal from the online pre-order. Incredibly tender and delicious. I would have liked the risotto to bit a bit creamier – it was a little runny. Though I’m not sure how much of that is from the cooking or the reheating. But nevertheless tasty.
Carrot and mushrooms were good, however the broccoli was a bit tasteless.
Dessert cart was around with a number of offerings – mango cake was nice. Ice cream was excellent – the dried raspberry was a great touch and worked well.
A warm towel was also brought around with dessert, and I had to try the sparkling jasmine tea which was light, fresh, and something I didn’t know I needed in my life – now I do.
About midway through the flight I sampled one of the snack options – the bulgogi braised short ribs. Which were good but nothing special.
Second Meal
Second meal began about 2 hours before landing. Sunrise lights on and a hot towel brought around.
The cappuccino was perfectly made with a dash of nutmeg on top.
I chose the Chinese course as recommended by the FA. shrimp was nice, spinach a bit flavorless, and the quiche thing was ok.
The beef was really nice though.
All in all so so, probably should have gone with the lobster ravioli which I had been leaning towards.
Fruit plate was next, which was excellent – even the cantaloupe.
Post meal oolong tea.
Before landing little sweets are brought around.
EVA Air Business Class In Flight Service
All in all fantastic service, as I have experienced and expect with EVA Air: Incredibly quick on the call buttons, even during post dinner cleanup. Proactively offering to make the bed after the first meal. And generally all around just cheerful service.
Perhaps the only negative note I’d make would be that I would like to see more proactive drink refills, but really a minor gripe as with the call button fills are at your leisure.
Bottom Line
I love flying EVA Air, and it is regularly a reward redemption I seek out when flying trans pacific, and this flight was no exception.
The service was superb, in flight meals excellent, and the seat comfortable and modern. The only issue being the slow wifi, which in this modern era EVA will need to address to remain competitive, as more and more airlines adopt Starlink.
