Review: Asiana Airlines Business Class Boeing 777-200ER [ICN - SEA]

Asiana Airlines Business class on their 777 from Seoul/Incheon to Seattle is a really solid trans-pacifc option. With great service and food, but suffering slightly from a few expected ‘luxury’ touches and a dated, but comfortable, hard product.
Overall Rating:
This flight was the second leg of a Singapore to Seattle trip booked through Aeroplan. I added a stopover in Seoul for a couple of days as it had been close to a decade since I was there last. Someday I’ll come back when it is not the dead of winter.

How I Booked Asiana Airlines Business Class
I was waiting for a while for rewards seats to pop for the beginning of December through Aeroplan and wasn’t getting much. From a little light research, Asiana seems to be a bit older and less premium than the normal flights I look for. They use older planes, and an inferior looking hard product. But as always, hard product is only a portion of the experience. Since I have never flown them before, I figured why not have a go. They have been recently purchased by Korean Air – if this is a good thing or not, I do not know.
The entire trip (Singapore to Seattle) cost me 87,500 Aeroplan points transferred over from Chase. 162 CAD in taxes and fees. And an additional 5000 points to add the Seoul stopover.
I found this availability with Seats.aero
Asiana Airlines 777 Business Class Lounge
Fun fact. The Incheon airport was the first international airport that I visited a lounge, which turned me on to this 10+ years ago. I had an 8 hour layover in Incheon flying home from Thailand. I was flying Korean Air and paid to get into their lounge.
Anyways.. checkin is at the A counters. A very ‘first class’ adjacent experience, with checkin counters sequestered away from the rest of them. There was no separate business class security, but also no lines this early afternoon.
Asiana operates 3 different lounges at Incheon terminal 1. East, West, and Central. Checkin tells me they are all the same, but we will look nevertheless.
Asiana Business Lounge East | Incheon International
I was informed this was the closest lounge to my gate, so the one I should use. It is located right outside of security – close to gate 21 – and up an escallator.
Checkin desk, though there are actually electronic gates for boarding pass scanning.
Nicely decorated ambiance in the walkway towards the main lounge space.
Private seating spaces to the left were all full at the moment.
Snuck a picture in from a different lounge (spoilers)
Bar side seating is quite full
Main seating is very busy this afternoon, presumably many flights using the East gates.
This is also a Star Alliance Gold lounge, and Priority Pass, so more than just Asiana passengers. There was a bit of a clear out after 4p, busy again around 6p-8p, but then quiet after 8 and until my flight.
More private seating with window/tarmac views
Was able to nab one just as someone left
I like the high ceilings and tarmac views. Lots of nice natural light.
Two massage chairs at the back – both being used at the moment in the East lounge, so picture stolen from a different lounge.
Restaurant area with table seating.
Pretty limited in the food department, but what is offered is very good. Staff are around with carts frequently clearing plates etc.
Its not South Korea without instant noodles.
Opposite of the restaurant is the bar area with self pour wines and beer.
Shower room is booked at the front desk. About a 20 minute wait when I booked later that evening at 630. Shower room a hair on the small size, but clean and well maintained.
A bit let down by the amenities provided. Kind of generic and mismatched compared to other airline branded lountes.
Shampoo and conditioner ‘Dove’ brand. While I don’t have a problem with Dove, you’d like to see more ‘premium’ offerings.
Asiana Business Lounge West | Incheon International
The Asiana West lounge is near the intersection of the 29-41 gates. Specifically near gate 30.
Also up an escalator and over a little bridge.
Only one real tangible difference between this and the East lounge. The window seating is replaced with couches, rather than the private cubicles.
West is much quieter at this time than East. Maybe a dozen or so people. The seats are arranged in a slightly different way – there may actually be more.
One of the massage chairs is in a dire state.
The other worked however. But all in Korean – good luck.
Asiana Business Lounge Central | Incheon International
The Asiana Central lounge is located at the intersection for gates 12-25, just outside of security.
Asiana Central is a carbon copy of West. And just as quiet – maybe 2 or 3 more people.
Early afternoon West or Central are the best bet for a bit of peace and quiet. They only really lack the private loungers facing the tarmac windows.
All of them are priority pass lounges, so they may get busier later
Same food options
Same bar options
Asiana Airlines 777 Business Class Boarding
Departing from gate 21, about a 5-10 minute walk from the East lounge. Boarding began a little late at 834, with separate jet bridges for business class.
The cabin has a bit of a ‘bleh’ color palate – Gray on beige with gold accents. I feel not quite as offensive as the old Eva Air product, but could certainly use an update.
Flight attendants are then around to say ‘hi’, describe the flight time and point out lavatories. Menus are then passed out shortly after explaining there will be a dinner service right after takeoff, and another meal service before landing. Drink and dinner orders are then taken.
The explanations, while for me are a bit unnecessary/excessive, provide a nice touch.
There is no hot or cold towel, nor welcome drink offered at boarding which is a miss though.
Asiana Airlines 777 Business Class Seat
The seat is in relatively good condition in spite of its age. Comfortable and spacious enough.
Pillows and blanket provided in the seat, but no mattress topper. Though the seat itself was comfortable enough as a bed.
Amenity kit, headphones, slippers, and water bottle provided at the console. As well as the headphone jack and USB charging.
The seat is not terribly private, in sitting mode you can see your neighbor quite clearly. But the seat can be recessed back a bit.
Seat adjustments were surprisingly good for the age of ht product. Took a bit to figure out the best way to lean the seat back and also have the seat bottom towards the rear of the seat, but we got it to work with a bit of trial and error (recline button pushes the seat forward, so you have to then slide the seat back – but not too far or the seat will ‘un recline’ itself).
Seat also has lumbar support which is great.
Screen is small and old, but good enough.
Footwell on the narrower side, but open towards the window so can be a bit clever with your legs.
Lower area below the foot bench does not have much space aside from stacked shoes.
Table is stored to the left of the screen, and folds down and over. A perk of this is that it does slide/push out of the way easily if you need to leave the seat during service.
Bit of a gripe that in flight, while the other cabin lights dim, these lights above the windows were kept bright as heck. Perhaps due to the age of the aircraft and what dimming was built in or not, but it became an annoyance.
Asiana Airlines 777 Business Class In Flight Entertainment
Very small screen and dinky headphones. Bit of a buzz and audio ground feedback noise when mine are plugged in. But to be expected from a product which I assume was designed/installed in the early 2000s.
Pretty lackluster selection of films, but has both newer and older options. Plenty of Korean media of course which will please some.
One perk of an older IFE is that I am not constantly bombarded with ads which is refreshing.
Headphones are really poor. They appear to sit ‘on-ear’ rather than ‘over ear’. Something I’d expect in premium economy rather than business. I did not bother to open to test.
I did find and play 9 holes of golf. Albeit not very well
Asiana Airlines 777 Business Class Meals
Tables are set and packaged refreshment towels are passed quickly after takeoff.
No pre-service champagne or nuts. Ive gone with the Steak of course.

Dinner
The cart is out with the appetizer and sides on a tray. A bit old school.
Appetizer of lobster salsa was something I’ve never heard of before, but really nice. Flavorful and balanced.
Empty plate was quickly cleared.
There was a bit of turbulence between courses. FAs were out to let us know about a 5 minute delay or so. Another plus one for communication.
The steak was tasty. With visible grill marks. Sauce as well was nice. About half the steak was a medium, while the center was more medium rare. Tender and tasty.
Mushrooms and veg were good and the potatoes were fluffy, but could have used a bit more seasoning.
Dessert quickly followed. The cheese plate was a bit basic but nice. Not a big fan of the veggies on the plate, would prefer just the fruits and cheese. The blueberry tart was especially tasty.
Apparently there is also a second dessert, a cake. Coffee/tea are also offered.
Cake was light and fluffy – really tasty.
After cakes the FAs are around to collect orders for the pre-landing meal.
Pre-Landing/Lunch
Meal service had already started right as I was waking up. Table was set almost immediately after they noticed I was up. Perhaps a bit quick for my liking, but I can appreciate the attentiveness.
The appetizer salad was a bit boring
Pasta main was tasty. Noodles a bit soft, but otherwise good. Presentation could perhaps be better, but I am a fan of pasta in a bowl.
Dessert and coffee/tea offered. Requested a latte but something may have been lost in translation and what I received I wouldn’t call a latte.
The dessert was tasty – quite ‘light’
Post dessert, main cabin lights were turned back off for the duration of the flight.
Asiana Airlines Business Class In Flight Service
The service itself on this flight I thought was excellent. Friendly and quick FAs. I appreciated the excellent communication about in flight happenings. Something I don’t necessarily need, but it is a nice touch.
Only really lacking in the service department is likely more down to Airline policy/systems. A few ‘finer’ touches that many other airlines offer were missing. No welcome drink, no hot towels. And if I get picky, warm nut and champagne service after takeoff is something that I’d like to see.
Aside form this though no complaints about the actual service itself.
Lavatories were kept clean and the front lavatory was actually massive – possibly the largest I’ve used on a plane.
However keeping with the lounge theme, amenities were a bit lacking. And no face mist.
Bottom Line
I do hold Asian carriers to a different standard than most. Simply because I am regularly impressed by the offerings – from the ground service, to the hard product, in-flight service, and other touches. Older airplanes and the lack of a few ‘finer touches’ hold back what is an otherwise great experience.
I think Asiana has the attitude that is needed to be a leading carrier but needs a bit of investment in Airplane improvements that will hopefully be part of the recent buyout by Korean Air.
While Asiana will not be my first choice in crossing the pacific, I am more than happy to select them if they suit my travel plans in the future.
